Photo-book materials and packaging

The three photo-book formats differ most in how they feel in your hands and how they present a two-page spread. Choose softcover for a light, flexible book, hardcover for a traditional case-bound keepsake with a dust jacket, or layflat for thick pages and nearly uninterrupted panoramic spreads.

Softcover: light and flexible

A softcover is easy to carry and flip through. Its flexible cover uses glossy cover stock with a satin UV coating, while the interior uses the same smooth 100# text stock as the hardcover format. The binding is glued for a slim, paperback-like profile.

This format works especially well for travel journals, everyday family stories, school projects, portfolios, recipe collections, and books you plan to carry or share often.

Hardcover: traditional and substantial

A hardcover uses a rigid image-wrapped case with scuff-resistant satin laminate. It includes customisable spine text and a full dust jacket that matches the cover. The dust jacket uses glossy cover stock with a satin UV coating, and the interior pages use smooth 100# text stock.

The added structure suits family albums, annual books, portfolios, graduations, anniversaries, and other milestone gifts. The protective matte sleeve and corrugated outer packaging help protect the finished book in transit.

Layflat: panoramic and presentation-ready

A layflat book is designed to open flat so a photograph can travel across both pages with only a subtle centre crease. Its double-thick, pearl-textured photographic paper gives each spread more weight than a standard photo-book page. The book has an image-wrapped hardcover with a soft-textured matte lamination.

Every layflat book comes in a white presentation box finished with clear foil stamping and a black ribbon. Corrugated outer packaging protects the box during shipping. This makes layflat a strong choice for weddings, panoramic travel photography, milestone albums, portfolios, and premium gifts.

Sizes and page capacity

All photo books start at 20 interior pages. Available sizes and maximum page counts depend on the selected format and shape. See Photo books for the current Motif Studio sizes and Pages and capacity for page limits.

In an open project, select Products to see the compatible formats and current price. Changing a book’s size or binding can change crops, text wrapping, cover geometry, and page capacity, so review the entire design afterward.
